Haredi Initiative 'Prison 1000' Offers Financial Aid for Detainees

A new initiative called 'Prison 1000' has been launched within Haredi communities to provide financial assistance to "Bnei Torah" (Torah scholars) who face arrest. The program aims to offer 1,000 shekels for each day of detention, covering legal fees, travel expenses, and lost income for the families of those detained. The initiative has received the official blessing of prominent rabbinical leaders, known as "Gedolei HaDor" (the greatest of the generation).

The program's strategic goals are threefold: to provide economic support and emotional security to detainees and their families; to alter the perceived equation of punishment, making judges and police less inclined to impose lengthy detentions by knowing it results in significant financial "rewards" for the detainee; and to demonstrate community strength and mutual responsibility within the Torah world.

The financial model is similar to established orphan funds. Participants contribute a nominal fee, capped at one shekel per day of detention, plus a small monthly administrative fee. The more members join, the lower the daily contribution per individual becomes. A council of five prominent rabbinical judges oversees the fund's operations, decision-making, and eligibility criteria.

The initiative is set to expand with mass registration drives in Haredi communities, particularly during the upcoming "Days of Mercy and Forgiveness." Booths will be set up in synagogues across Israel to allow thousands to officially join the project, which organizers believe will create a protective shield for Torah scholars.
