Maccabi Haifa could sell center back Lisav Eissat as early as this summer, despite signing him to a long-term contract, after growing interest from European clubs. According to Sport5, Schalke, the newly promoted Bundesliga side, has submitted an offer for the 21-year-old defender after monitoring him both in Romania national team matches and for Haifa.
Schalke is seeking reinforcements in central defense. The club’s squad this season included Edin Džeko and goalkeeper Loris Karius, who recently extended his contract.
Eissat had a breakthrough season for Maccabi Haifa, making 26 league appearances, scoring one goal and adding two assists. His biggest milestone came with a call-up to Romania’s senior national team, for which he has already made four official appearances. His senior Romania caps and his European passport have increased interest in him.
At the same time, Maccabi Haifa extended Noam Steifman’s contract yesterday, while Sean Goldberg and Elad Amir also had their deals renewed. Pedrao still has one more season on his contract, but a foreign center back is expected to arrive in his place, so Haifa would still have four center backs even if Eissat is sold.
