Italian Prime Minister Meloni Marks Record Term Length
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has achieved a historic milestone, with her government becoming the longest-serving consecutive administration in post-World War II Italy. Speaking at a rally in Bari, Meloni highlighted her government's stability, contrasting it with the frequent changes in leadership seen in countries like France and the UK. She asserted that Italy, once dubbed the 'sick man of Europe' due to chronic political instability, has regained international respect and financial market confidence under her tenure.
Meloni, who became Italy's first female prime minister on October 22, 2022, surpassed the previous record of 1,412 days held by Silvio Berlusconi. Her government, a coalition of right-wing parties including Brothers of Italy, the League, and Forza Italia, has passed approximately 300 laws and decrees, many focused on security issues and immigration. The party claims its anti-immigration policies have reduced migrant arrivals by 80%.
Despite the achievement of stability, critics point to a lack of significant growth and argue that essential public services like healthcare and education remain inefficient. Labor union leader Maurizio Landini noted that wages have not increased, while fuel costs and job insecurity have risen. Some opponents have accused the government of fostering a 'police state' atmosphere and a 'war and arms economy.'
During the rally in Bari, Meloni acknowledged that some reforms have not progressed as quickly as desired. However, supporters praised her for restoring Italy's international standing and demonstrating strong leadership, particularly in her relatively restrained criticism of Israel during the Gaza conflict, compared to other European leaders.
Meloni is expected to lead the right-wing bloc in the upcoming elections, though current polls show a slight lead for the center-left. A new political challenge has emerged from former General Roberto Vannacci, whose far-right party is gaining traction and could potentially influence the political landscape.
