Orthodox Content Creator Challenges Haredi Parties on Women's Representation

Yael Zilberman, a content creator and social media influencer who identifies as a feminist Haredi woman, has spoken out against the lack of female representation in Haredi political parties. Appearing on the "Off the Record" podcast, Zilberman argued that the claim that including women in political lists is immodest is hypocritical, especially when Haredi politicians interact with secular female lawmakers. "Is sitting next to a secular female Knesset member modest?" she questioned, suggesting that including Haredi women in politics should be equally acceptable. Zilberman believes this exclusion will seem absurd in the future.

Zilberman, who has faced criticism from both secular individuals regarding army enlistment and from some within the Haredi community who question her religious observance due to her online presence, asserts that her choices are conscious and rooted in love for her community, not oppression. She stated, "I choose what I want to take out of the closet. The fact that I am modest is a choice to remain in this society, I am not in a cult."

She also noted that the Haredi community is undergoing significant changes, including the rise of the "State Haredi" stream, the integration of core curriculum studies, and an increasing willingness for military service, which she sees even within her own family. Zilberman's appearance on the reality show "Let's Eat" on Kan 11 also highlighted the gap between secular stereotypes and Haredi reality, as she presented a modern meal, challenging preconceptions.

Zilberman sees her public presence as a harbinger of broader Haredi voices in Israeli society, advocating for a more inclusive and nuanced representation of her community.
