Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Team Kicks Off Season Amidst Fan Frenzy and Ownership Dispute

Maccabi Tel Aviv's basketball team officially launched its pre-season training on Friday, marked by a vibrant fan celebration despite ongoing ownership turmoil. Hundreds of fans filled the stands at the city's sports center, welcoming coach Oded Katash and the players with confetti and smoke flares. The atmosphere was electric, with fans chanting and expressing their support.

A focal point of the fan reception was new acquisition Yam Madar, who transferred from a rival team. Madar received a loud welcome, including chants directed at Ofer Yanai, the owner of the opposing team. Bonzie Colson, returning for his second stint with Maccabi after playing in Turkey, also energized the crowd.

The enthusiastic fans even breached the court shortly after the practice began, lifting players onto their shoulders amidst a haze of smoke from flares. Most of the team participated, with the exception of Jimmy Clark, who is injured, and Goran Lavi, who is still recovering from surgery.

Team captain John DiBartolomeo expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, stating, "We missed the crowd, we are excited to start." He highlighted the team's potential and his eagerness to play for the fans in both the Israeli league and the EuroLeague.

The team's preparations include upcoming exhibition games against Maccabi Rishon LeZion, followed by matches in Cyprus against Aris Thessaloniki and Olympiacos, as they gear up for the domestic and EuroLeague seasons. This festive start comes just a day after a closed preparation game where Maccabi lost to Bnei Herzliya.

Amidst the celebrations, an incident occurred where police announced an investigation into a civilian security guard suspected of assaulting a minor fan. The guard was questioned and released under restrictive conditions.
