Miracle Rescues in Nepal: Two Survivors Found After 10 Days Trapped

Nepalese rescuers have found two more survivors of a devastating flood that occurred 10 days prior, according to international media. A Chinese worker, Lu Haitao, was pulled from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric power station. The rescue operation was extremely difficult, with Nepalese military and South Korean specialists working in the damaged structure under threat of collapse and further flooding. Lu Haitao was discovered approximately 225 meters from the tunnel entrance and was airlifted to a hospital, where his condition is reported as stable.

Separately, a 64-year-old woman, Chandrika Shrestha, was found alive in Betrawati, Nuwakot district. Her four-story house was completely buried by a mudslide, with only a portion of the roof visible. She was discovered almost by chance while debris was being cleared.

These rescues follow the discovery on September 4th of two Nepalese workers, Sanjay Saha and Kabir Maharjan, who had spent approximately nine days trapped in a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A hydroelectric station.

The catastrophic natural disaster occurred on August 26th in the Trishuli River valley in northern Nepal. The event was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier, which sent a massive amount of ice and rock into the river, temporarily damming it. The subsequent bursting of this natural dam unleashed a colossal flow of water, mud, ice, and stones, destroying villages, roads, and bridges. Over 1,300 people have died, and more than 5,000 are missing, including two Israelis. Several hydroelectric power stations were severely affected, with approximately 900 workers missing from 12 affected facilities, about 500 of whom may be trapped in tunnels.
