Protests Erupt in Shfaram Over Candidate's Withdrawal Amid Harassment Allegations

Dozens of activists from the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality party (Hadash) staged a noisy protest and verbal altercations at the Al-Awadiya hall in Shfaram. The demonstration was in response to the withdrawal of Jaafar Faraj, the second candidate on the Joint List, following statements by feminist groups accusing him of harassment. The allegations against Faraj have not been legally or judicially proven.

The protesters voiced their opposition to selecting a replacement candidate for Faraj. Faraj himself was reportedly taken to the hospital due to psychological distress stemming from the controversy and the pressure of addressing the accusations.

Mohammad Barakeh, a prominent leader, confirmed he conveyed a message to dissenting members of the Front's council, emphasizing that Faraj's resignation was voluntary and without coercion. The demonstration followed a political and organizational crisis within the party related to the allegations against Faraj. The party and the Communist Party had previously issued a statement on the matter before Faraj announced his withdrawal, stating his decision was made to uphold responsibility and the unity of the Joint List.

The Front announced that Faraj had informed its leadership of his decision to withdraw his candidacy, asserting that the move was coordinated with party bodies and leaders. They also stated he would continue his political and social activities and support the Front, the party, and the Joint List.

Knesset member Aida Touma-Suleiman stated in an interview that the debate surrounding Faraj's case does not affect the Joint List, and that the list has overcome all difficulties. The protest occurs as the Front prepares to select a new candidate for the second seat, which became vacant after Faraj won it in internal elections.

Previously, the Front and the Communist Party stated that a special team examined the allegations but was not a fact-finding committee. Its role was to study the implications of the case and provide political, organizational, and media recommendations, not to prove or disprove the claims.

Support for Faraj in the public sphere coincides with ongoing internal discussions within the Front regarding the identity of the candidate for the second seat, amid calls to overcome the crisis, preserve the list's unity, and prepare for upcoming elections.
