Unity Party Leader Gilad Erdan Withdraws from Upcoming Elections

Gilad Erdan, leader of the newly formed Unity Party, announced that his party will not compete in the upcoming elections, shortly after negotiations with Benny Gantz collapsed. Erdan stated that he founded the party out of a "sense of mission," believing Israel needed a broad Zionist government capable of passing a genuine conscription law and resolving disputes. He cited the "terrible massacre of October 7th" and the heavy price paid by Israelis as reasons for a change in direction. However, Erdan acknowledged that after a month of campaigning, public sentiment prioritizes a clear decision on the prime minister's identity, with a broad unity government not being a top priority for citizens.

Erdan explained that despite significant efforts, the Unity Party's support has not been sufficient to likely pass the electoral threshold. Furthermore, opportunities to merge with other parties within the "Unity Bloc" have not materialized. Consequently, he decided to withdraw the party from the election.

"Leadership is also about recognizing reality as it is and acting responsibly," Erdan said, emphasizing the need to ensure his voters' voices influence the election outcome without being wasted. He thanked his partners, including Yuli Edelstein, Aliza Bloch, and Oren Smadja, who joined the party. Erdan affirmed his continued public commitment and his role as a public servant, vowing to work for the people, IDF soldiers, and a better future for Israel.

Erdan, who left the Likud party, had established his party as part of a "third bloc" largely aligned with right-wing positions, though its leaders claimed they would not form a majority bloc and would enforce a broad coalition. This bloc also includes Gantz's Blue and White party and a faction led by Yoaz Hendel and Chili Tropper. The party of Gadi Eisenkot, Yisrael Beiteinu, responded positively to Erdan's decision, calling it responsible and leadership-driven, increasing the chances of replacing the current government and forming a broad Zionist government. They urged other parties near the electoral threshold to act with similar responsibility.

The Blue and White party commented that the most responsible action after years of war and political crisis is to form a cross-bloc Zionist government, preventing one reliant on Arab or Haredi parties.
