Former UN Envoy Erdan Pulls Party From Knesset Elections

Former Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, announced Friday evening that his party, "HaAchdut," will not participate in the upcoming Knesset elections scheduled for October 27. Erdan explained that public sentiment prioritizes a clear decision on the next prime minister, with a broad unity government not being a primary citizen concern.

He stated that despite significant efforts, "HaAchdut" lacks the support to surpass the electoral threshold, and coalition options with other "unity camp" parties have not materialized. Erdan believes leadership requires acknowledging reality and acting responsibly to ensure his voters' voices contribute to the election outcome without being wasted.

The withdrawal follows failed coalition talks between Erdan's party and Benny Gantz's "Blue and White" party. Israeli public broadcaster "Kan 11" reported that Gantz informed Erdan on Friday that he was not interested in the alliance.

Gantz had hoped to form a large "third camp" coalition under his leadership. However, other potential allies, including Dadi Samhi, have opted out, and Ayelet Shaked is reportedly disinclined to join. Gantz specifically decided against an alliance with Erdan's party, deeming it unhelpful, and anticipated Erdan's withdrawal, expecting some of his supporters to join Gantz individually.
