Israeli Defense Industry Threatens Production Halt Over Funding Dispute

Israel's defense industry leaders have warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that some weapons production lines could cease by September if the government fails to provide promised funding. According to Israel's Channel N12, heads of defense companies are demanding firm payment commitments and additional funds from the government. Failure to secure this financing jeopardizes the production of armaments and military equipment for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The crisis stems from a dispute over the defense budget. The Ministry of Defense requested an additional 40 billion shekels to cover a deficit, which would have raised total defense spending to 184 billion shekels. However, the government has not agreed to allocate the full amount.

Defense industry representatives emphasize that the funding delay is particularly critical amid ongoing hostilities. They estimate that payment delays for state orders could disrupt operations and threaten the continuous supply of weapons to the army. The budget shortfall could also impact the IDF directly, forcing military leadership to prepare for significant spending cuts, including reducing reserve duty periods. This would place a greater burden on conscripted soldiers. Another potential measure involves freezing some repair programs, including the restoration of tanks and armored personnel carriers damaged in combat.

Longer-term consequences are also a concern, with military officials warning that insufficient funding could delay the procurement of new fighter jets and helicopters needed to modernize the Israeli Air Force for years.
