Defense Industry Chiefs Warn Netanyahu of Factory Shutdowns Over Budget Crisis

Defense industry leaders have officially warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that production lines could halt and weapons manufacturing cease this month if the government does not provide firm payment commitments and additional funding. The warning comes amid a severe budget crisis in early September 2026, involving defense contractors, the military, and the Ministry of Finance.

The ultimatum was triggered by the government's refusal to allocate an additional 40 billion shekels requested by the Ministry of Defense to cover a deficit, which would have brought the total defense budget to 184 billion shekels. Defense industry executives emphasized that delayed or unfulfilled payments undermine Israel's industrial independence and jeopardize the continuous supply of equipment to the army, which is engaged in combat on multiple fronts.

In response to the budget shortfall, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing significant internal cutbacks. These measures include reducing reserve duty call-up days, which will increase the burden on conscripts, and freezing repair and maintenance work on tanks and armored personnel carriers damaged in combat.

Furthermore, military leadership is anticipating multi-year delays in the procurement of new fighter jets and helicopters, a development that would severely impact the nation's long-term strategic capabilities.
