Iranian Dissident Doubts Popular Uprising Can Topple Regime

An Iranian opposition figure, speaking to i24NEWS from Iran on Thursday, expressed skepticism about the possibility of a new popular uprising successfully overthrowing the government. He stated that the momentum for change that existed in the immediate aftermath of recent events has gradually faded. "People have become accustomed to this situation, and the regime's supporters are no longer afraid," he explained, adding that they are "gradually regaining control."

The dissident also criticized the Basij paramilitary force, describing it as a cornerstone of the regime. He asserted that the problem lies not only with the Iranian authorities but also with those who continue to support them, stating, "The regime feeds specifically on this armed base."

When asked about the public's ability to oust the regime, he argued that ordinary citizens cannot achieve this alone. He highlighted the effectiveness of state propaganda, claiming, "No other country matches the Iranian regime in this regard." He also mentioned Iranians who believe Israel could end the situation if it were solely up to them, but noted that the outcome also depends on then-US President Donald Trump.

He cautioned against predicting the regime's fall and warned of the dangers of widespread arming of the population. "I truly fear the outbreak of a civil war. If Iranians are armed, who knows where those weapons will end up?" he stated. He believes that any serious attempt to overthrow the regime requires organized, structured groups capable of leading the country afterward, rather than a spontaneous popular movement.
