Smart Pedestrian Crossing With Lighting Tested in Kfar Saba

Kfar Saba has begun testing a new smart pedestrian crossing designed to enhance safety, particularly during nighttime hours. Developed by the Israeli company Safecross, the system aims to alert drivers to pedestrians before they step onto the road, providing more time for safe braking at unregulated crossings. The technology utilizes solar energy and compact sensors mounted on existing light poles and signs. When a pedestrian approaches the curb, the system detects their presence and activates a bright, directed spotlight illuminating the entire crossing area. This innovation addresses visibility issues for both pedestrians and drivers, especially in poor weather conditions. According to the National Road Safety Administration, 74 pedestrians have died on Israeli roads since the beginning of 2026, highlighting the urgency of such safety measures. Kfar Saba is the first city to pilot this technology in a real urban environment. If the project proves effective in reducing accidents, similar smart systems may be implemented at other hazardous unregulated crossings nationwide.
