Kiryat Shmona Hesder Yeshiva marked the completion of Tractate Berakhot through its “Fathers and Sons” learning project, which was established in memory of Staff Sgt. Eitan Dishon, a student at the yeshiva and a Givati reconnaissance soldier killed in the fighting of the Iron Swords War. Dishon was killed in combat in northern Gaza on the 7th of Kislev, 5784, at the age of 21.
The event was attended by his parents, Dori and Shira Dishon, other family members, the yeshiva’s leaders and rabbis, Rabbi Doki Ben Artzi, and fathers and children who had taken part in the joint study over recent months. The yeshiva said that this week it will begin studying Tractate Megillah as the next stage of the project.
In remarks at the ceremony, Dori Dishon said the shared learning had not been his idea, but his son’s. After Eitan returned to the yeshiva following his army service, he suggested that they begin studying the daily Talmud page together in Tractate Kiddushin. Dori said he had not expected it to continue, but Eitan persisted every night at 7:30 p.m. and made sure they did not miss a day.
He said Eitan was the one who effectively taught the sessions, often while Dori was driving. After Eitan’s death, a copy of Tractate Kiddushin was found among his belongings, the tractate that accompanied their study. Shira Dishon said the project gives her strength and meaning, adding that while she counts the years since Eitan’s death, she also counts the new tractates she has been privileged to complete because of him.
