MasterChef Star and Disabled Veteran Share Their Journey with PTSD
Dorit Abdan, a contestant on the Israeli version of "MasterChef," and her husband Ron Abdan, a disabled IDF veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), have shared their experiences navigating the challenges of his condition. Ron was injured in 2015 when an explosive device detonated near him while he was on guard duty, resulting in the loss of his left eye and subsequent PTSD. The couple met in 2019, and Dorit has become a pillar of support, learning to manage Ron's triggers, anger outbursts, and nightmares.
Dorit herself has overcome significant personal health challenges. After a failed weight-loss surgery in her youth, she had her stomach removed and now eats through tubes, experiencing severe pain and complications. Despite this, she pursued her passion for cooking, eventually reaching the top seven in "MasterChef Israel" and now cooks for "Belev Echad," an organization that supports wounded soldiers and their families.
Ron also works for "Belev Echad," which he credits with saving his life by providing him with psychological and physical support, as well as a sense of community. The organization also offers support groups for the spouses of wounded soldiers, where Dorit learned coping mechanisms to better understand and manage Ron's PTSD. She emphasizes the strength of women married to combat veterans, calling them "queens" and stressing the importance of finding support and tools to navigate the difficulties.
The couple acknowledges that their journey is ongoing and that each individual's experience with PTSD is unique. They encourage open communication, seeking professional help, and finding supportive environments as crucial steps in learning to live with the condition. Ron highlights that while PTSD doesn't disappear, it is possible to build a fulfilling life alongside it.
