Trump Hosts Major Rebbeim in Historic White House Meeting

President Donald Trump held a significant meeting with prominent Hasidic rebbes and yeshiva leaders from the United States at the White House this week. The gathering, described as historic and the first of its kind in four decades, took place in the Oval Office.

Officially, the meeting was intended for the President to offer a New Year's greeting ahead of the High Holy Days and express gratitude to the leaders of major Jewish communities. However, the agenda also included discussions on pressing issues such as government intervention in religious educational institutions in the U.S., aid for Jewish prisoners, and concerns regarding Israel's draft law and its impact on yeshiva students.

The initiative for the meeting was spearheaded by Martin Marx, the White House's liaison to the Jewish community, who spent months coordinating the delegation and logistics. The gathering marks the first time such a broad representation of leaders from major Hasidic dynasties in the U.S. has been officially received at this level since 1979.

Among the attendees were the rebbes of Satmar, Bobov, and Vizhnitz Monsey, a representative from Skver, and Rabbi Malkiel Kotler, head of Beth Medrash Gevoha yeshiva in Lakewood. The leaders emphasized their obligation to represent their communities' needs, despite their busy study schedules and the approach of the High Holy Days.

Participants planned to convey the distress within the Haredi community in Israel regarding the draft law, highlighting the concerns of tens of thousands of yeshiva students. They expressed hope that their discussions would garner favor with the administration and aid in strengthening religious observance and support for the community. Coincidentally, during the meeting, Israel's Supreme Court unanimously overturned an emergency order that had canceled the arrest of yeshiva students.
