Trump to Host Haredi Rabbis at White House Ahead of Rosh Hashanah

U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to host an unusual delegation of Hasidic rebbes and yeshiva deans from prominent American Haredi communities at the White House on Thursday. The meeting, set to take place in the Oval Office at 12:30 PM EST, comes ahead of the Jewish New Year.

While the official purpose is to offer New Year blessings, some rabbis intend to raise pressing issues affecting the Haredi community in the U.S. and Israel. The White House has not issued a formal statement, but an administration official confirmed the meeting to Jewish Insider, noting Trump's anticipation of blessing rabbis representing major Hasidic communities and acknowledging their significant electoral support. This gathering marks the first time such a delegation has met at the White House since 1979.

Reports indicate invitations were extended to leaders including the Rebbes of Satmar (both factions), Skver, Bobov 48, and Vizhnitz Monsey, as well as Rabbi Arie Malkiel Kotler, dean of Beth Medrash Gevoha in Lakewood. However, the final delegation composition remains unclear, with some leaders reportedly sending representatives instead of attending personally. Rabbi Aaron Menachem Mendel Twersky, son of the Skver Rebbe, is expected to attend in his father's stead, and a son of the Bobov 48 Rebbe may also represent him.

Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum of Satmar publicly confirmed his invitation, stating he decided to attend despite the busy Elul period, hoping direct access to the President could help those in need. Martin Marx, the White House liaison to the Jewish community, is credited with initiating and organizing the meeting over several months.

Initial plans for brief, individual two-minute meetings were met with some reservations, notably from the Satmar Rebbe, leading to discussions about extending some sessions to five minutes and potentially arranging a group meeting. Beyond the New Year greetings, the delegation aims to address key concerns. The Satmar Rebbe is expected to discuss the campaign against the conscription of yeshiva students in Israel, detailing the impact of enforcement actions and judicial sanctions. Another issue to be raised involves the conditions of Jewish inmates in federal prisons, with requests for leniency regarding visitation policies and participation in family events.

Additionally, Haredi educational institutions in New York may bring up challenges related to state demands for expanded secular studies and oversight of yeshivas. Despite its unique nature, the meeting has received minimal coverage in mainstream U.S. media, with attention concentrated on Jewish and Haredi outlets. If the planned delegation attends, it would be a rare appearance of major Hasidic leaders and a prominent yeshiva dean in the Oval Office, offering an unusual opportunity to present Haredi community concerns to the U.S. President.
