Prisoners Restrained on Floor Ahead of National Security Minister's Visit

Female prisoners at Israel's Neve Tirtza prison were allegedly handcuffed and forced to lie face down on the floor shortly before a visit by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir two days prior, according to a report by Kan News. The minister reportedly arrived at the women's facility around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. Criminal inmates from two sections were allegedly removed from their beds, restrained at their hands and legs, and made to lie on the floor in a manner typically used for security prisoners.

Minister Ben-Gvir allegedly walked among the prisoners as they lay on the ground. This treatment is considered unusual for female inmates. The Israel Prison Service (IPS) stated that a search of cells was coincidentally underway during the minister's visit. They added that such operations are conducted with necessary security measures to protect staff and inmates, and that the IPS will continue to maintain order, security, and control within correctional facilities.

However, the report notes that during cell searches, guards usually gather inmates in an open area and return them to their cells afterward. Such searches are typically conducted in response to disturbances, assaults on guards, or the discovery of weapons. It is understood that none of these circumstances preceded the searches in this instance.

Minister Ben-Gvir's office issued a statement saying the minister regularly tours all prisons, particularly those housing security prisoners and spies. They confirmed his visit included sections holding alleged Iranian spies, suspects in a murder case, and a terrorist. The statement expressed pride that the IPS has changed its policy and is exhibiting zero tolerance towards these offenders, declaring that "the summer camp is over, even in the women's prison."
