Arab Nurse Arrested, Released Twice in Alleged Patient Abuse Case

An Arab nurse working at the Ha'Emek Medical Center in Afula was arrested in late August on suspicion of injecting a patient with an unknown substance and then touching her body while she was in a confused state. The police requested an extension of his detention, but the Magistrate's Court ordered his release, a decision later upheld by the District Court, which rejected the police's appeal.

According to the suspicions, the nurse administered an unspecified substance to the patient during her hospitalization and subsequently touched her body, including her legs. The patient reportedly noticed the actions, alerted the police, and provided a statement while in a state of confusion.

The suspect was brought before the Magistrate's Court in Tiberias, where police sought to extend his detention for further investigation. Judge Revka Lachman denied the request, stating that the investigation could proceed even with the suspect released.

Senior police officials reportedly believe that the evidence presented during the hearings justified continued detention until key investigative actions were completed. The Ha'Emek Medical Center stated that it takes any allegation of patient harm or inappropriate conduct by staff very seriously and is cooperating fully with the police, but declined to provide further details due to the active investigation.

The suspect's attorney commented that the court's decisions to release his client indicate that the police's request for detention was unwarranted. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect has not been convicted of any charges.
