Rambam Hospital Director Denies Abuse Claims Against Arab Staff, Highlights Team Diversity and Support

Dr. Michal Mekel, director of Rambam Hospital in Haifa, addressed recent allegations accusing the hospital’s Arab medical staff of mistreating an IDF soldier injured in Lebanon. Mekel emphasized that the intensive care unit (ICU) team was diverse, including both Jewish and Arab doctors and nurses, and strongly denied any truth to the claims. She explained that the hospital’s treatment of soldiers is closely coordinated with the Israeli military, which fully supports the care provided.

The controversy erupted after a family member of the wounded soldier posted on Instagram, alleging that Arabic-speaking staff locked ICU doors to families and treated the patient roughly. Mekel clarified that ICU protocols limit family visits to protect patient privacy and ensure intensive care quality, and that any repositioning of patients is done sensitively with pain management. She stressed the difference between necessary medical care and abuse, stating no abuse occurred.

Following the social media post, the hospital conducted a thorough investigation involving all staff present during the shift, concluding the complaints were unfounded. Mekel noted the incident caused significant distress among the medical team, who have been working tirelessly to treat numerous wounded soldiers amid ongoing conflict. Mekel also highlighted the hospital’s commitment to coexistence, with about one-third of employees from the Arab sector, and expressed concern about the broader societal tensions inflamed by the incident. The soldier was transferred to Sheba Medical Center in stable condition and expressed gratitude for the treatment received.
