Suspect in 10-Year-Old's Abduction to Remain in Custody Amid Fears of More Victims

The suspect in the abduction of 10-year-old Yahli from Petah Tikva will remain in custody until at least early next week, following a court hearing on Thursday. Police requested an additional eight-day detention, citing the high level of suspicion and the suspect's dangerousness. The court extended his remand until September 8.

During the hearing, a significant debate occurred regarding the suspect's identity. Police sought to lift the gag order on his name, arguing that public disclosure could aid the investigation, potentially uncover additional victims, and encourage witnesses to come forward. The court initially agreed, but the suspect's defense attorney requested a delay, which was granted until September 6.

The investigation into Yahli's experience is ongoing, with the child reportedly having difficulty recalling the events and requesting to stop the interview at one point. The defense, however, presented evidence suggesting Yahli left willingly and without force, pointing to police footage where the child appears to follow the suspect with his scooter.

The suspect's mental state was also a central issue. A social worker from the "Triangle Thread" association in Jerusalem, who has known the suspect for about a year, described him as having difficulty with social cues, understanding conversations, and maintaining personal hygiene. She noted attempts to connect him with a psychiatrist were unsuccessful due to communication barriers, and he was reportedly sleeping in a storage shed prior to his arrest.

The suspect's mother also testified, detailing his severe mental distress, including not showering for years, unusual behavior, and not sleeping at home, instead staying in shelters or on the street. She mentioned he had stolen clothes from his siblings, who did not want him sleeping at home. Despite these accounts, the judge maintained the detention order, citing the ongoing high level of suspicion and dangerousness.

The suspect, a resident of Jerusalem, allegedly abducted Yahli from Petah Tikva and took him to Ramat Gan. He was arrested on August 30 on charges of kidnapping and child theft. The court also ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect. The incident began on Sunday evening when Yahli disappeared, and he was found with the suspect in Bnei Brak around 1:30 AM after a five-hour search.
