Top Rabbis Urge Public to Fund Bone Marrow Donor Registrations

Leading rabbis have issued an unusual joint letter calling for urgent public support for bone marrow donor registrations, emphasizing the life-saving potential of such donations, especially with rising cancer rates. The appeal, spearheaded by Rabbi Chananya Cholak of the Ezras Achim organization, highlights the critical need for these donations as the High Holy Days approach, a period when many seek to perform good deeds.

The letter states that bone marrow transplants are the only hope for many patients suffering from severe illnesses. It credits Ezras Achim's donor program with facilitating nearly 500 matches that have saved numerous lives. The cost for a single compatibility test is 180 shekels, a sum the rabbis encourage every individual to cover as a form of 'redemption of the soul' and a merit for themselves and their families.

Rabbis signing the letter offer a unique blessing, stating that those who participate in this significant mitzvah will be blessed with good health in return, both for themselves and their households. They also suggest that such contributions will serve as a powerful advocate on their behalf during the Day of Judgment.

Rabbi Cholak stressed the importance of this initiative, acknowledging the current economic hardships but reiterating the principle of 'measure for measure,' where acts of kindness are reciprocated by divine favor. He concluded by emphasizing that repentance, prayer, and charity can avert harsh decrees, and a generous donation can achieve great things.

Ezras Achim shared a recent success story of a child who, after months of facing death due to the lack of a match, had his life saved by a donor identified through the organization's extensive search of tens of thousands of samples. The organization urges the public to seize this opportunity to save lives and secure their own spiritual merit.
