Hundreds of Chickens Burn to Death in Truck Fire on Highway 6

Hundreds of chickens were killed in a fire that engulfed a transport truck on Highway 6 early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 00:22 near the Ma'achaz interchange, when firefighters from the Kiryat Gat station were dispatched to the scene. They successfully extinguished the blaze and confirmed there were no human casualties, but reported significant damage and the loss of the birds.

The tragedy has reignited public debate in Israel surrounding the transportation of live animals. Animal welfare organizations have long campaigned against live shipments, citing issues such as overcrowding, heat stress, pollution, injuries, and animal deaths during long journeys and subsequent transport. Several legislative proposals aimed at restricting or banning live shipments have been introduced in the Knesset over the years, but none have yet been enacted.

"The difficult scenes on Highway 6 tonight are a shocking reminder that behind the word 'chickens' are hundreds of living animals who feel fear and pain, and whose lives were taken within an industry whose sole purpose is to produce animals for human consumption," stated the animal rights organization "Freedom for Animals." The organization suggested that for some of the animals, the fiery end may have mercifully spared them a continuation of their "short and cruel journey."

"Freedom for Animals" also called for a full investigation into the incident by the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant authorities. They urged officials to examine the transport conditions and accountability for the failure, and to take action to end the unnecessary suffering of animals in an industry that can and should be sustained without them. The organization criticized the ministry's oversight and enforcement as insufficient to ensure genuine animal protection.
