Analyst Outlines Best and Worst Case Scenarios for Deni Avdija's Upcoming NBA Season

A Portland Trail Blazers beat writer has analyzed the upcoming NBA season for Israeli player Deni Avdija, outlining both optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for his performance in the 2026-2027 season. Mike Richman, writing for the "Locked On Blazers" podcast, suggested that in the best-case scenario, Avdija could elevate his game to All-Star status.

Richman described this optimistic outlook as Avdija joining a "special group of players" who are consistently invited to the All-Star game. He believes the additions of players like De'Aaron Fox and Damian Lillard to the team will not detract from Avdija's game but rather highlight his unique abilities. In this scenario, Avdija's three-point shooting would remain strong at around 36-37%, his driving and finishing skills would be elite, and his defense would improve due to a potentially less demanding offensive role. Richman emphasized that Avdija would prove to be "fit-any-lineup" player, capable of excelling regardless of his teammates.

Conversely, Richman's pessimistic scenario does not involve injuries but rather a potential decline in Avdija's effectiveness on the court. This could occur if the ball-dominant play of new teammates like Fox and Lillard diminishes Avdija's own strengths. If his three-point shooting falls below average, especially when playing off-ball, his limitations would become more apparent. The pessimistic view also suggests his defense might regress to last season's disappointing level, and his best performances might be limited to minutes when he isn't sharing the court with the new star guards.

Richman clarified that even in the worst-case scenario, Avdija would not become a marginal player due to his established skill level. Instead, the concern is that the player who excelled last season by doing "everything" might lose the opportunity to do so. The analyst concluded that Avdija's potential range is narrow, either All-Star level or one step below, but still believes he has a path to achieving All-Star status this year.
