Analyst Outlines Best and Worst Case Scenarios for Deni Avdija's NBA Season

As the NBA season approaches, Mike Richman, a reporter covering the Portland Trail Blazers for the "Locked On Blazers" podcast, has analyzed the upcoming season for Israeli player Deni Avdija. Richman detailed both the most optimistic and pessimistic outlooks for Avdija's 2026-27 season, emphasizing that these scenarios are based on on-court performance rather than injuries.

The "best-case scenario" presented by Richman envisions Avdija becoming a consistent NBA All-Star. This would involve him proving his ability to perform at an elite level alongside other ball-dominant players, such as the newly acquired Ja Morant and Damian Lillard. Richman suggested that their presence would highlight Avdija's unique skills rather than detract from them, elevating him to a reliable All-Star caliber player regardless of his teammates. In this scenario, Avdija's three-point shooting would remain around 36-37%, his driving and finishing abilities would be top-tier, and his defense would improve due to a potentially less demanding offensive role.

Richman described this optimistic outcome as Avdija becoming an "adjustment-proof" player whose game fits any lineup and who is recognized as one of the NBA's best, irrespective of who he plays with. This contrasts with the previous season, where Avdija carried a team with many "Two-Way" players, and instead sees him leading alongside former All-Stars and rising young talent, asserting his capability to play with anyone.

Conversely, the "worst-case scenario" posits that the addition of more ball-dominant guards could diminish Avdija's impact. Richman fears that his shooting might fall below average, making him less effective when playing off the ball and forced to shoot from the perimeter. In this projection, Avdija's best performance would occur when he is not sharing the court with Morant and Lillard, and his defense would regress to the disappointing level seen in the previous season. Richman clarified that this pessimistic outlook does not mean Avdija would become a marginal player, but rather that his "do-it-all" role, which led to his All-Star status, might be curtailed.

Richman concluded by stating that while Avdija has proven he can expand his role, the worst outcome would be him being asked to do less, potentially hindering the team's success.
