Israeli Journalists Face Fivefold Increase in Online Harassment

A recent study by the Israeli watchdog organization Fake Reporter reveals a fivefold increase in negative, abusive, and inciting online content targeting Israeli journalists and media outlets over the past two years. The research, covering August 2024 to July 2026, analyzed over a million posts from approximately 6,000 authors, many of whom are identified as supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The study found that a single significant news event can trigger thousands of posts within hours, often escalating from professional criticism to accusations of treason, conspiracy theories, and threats.

Fake Reporter observed a consistent pattern on social media platform X, where journalists and their families have become targets. The organization noted a 404% surge in hostile content compared to the preceding two years. While acknowledging that the figures reflect overall discussion volume rather than solely negative posts, researchers identified a clear trend of increased personal attacks following major news stories.

Notable incidents include a surge of 5,333 posts targeting journalist Guy Peleg in August 2024 after he aired footage of alleged mistreatment of a Palestinian detainee. In November 2024, journalist Ronen Bergman faced conspiracy theories accusing him of undermining military operations after reporting on IDF internal investigations into the October 7 failures. Similar patterns emerged after televised disputes, such as one involving Guy Peleg in March 2025.

The targets of these online campaigns vary, with some journalists and outlets seeing reduced attention while others, like Lucy Aharish and Ronen Bergman, experienced increased scrutiny. The study also identified prominent online accounts and individuals, including an anonymous account named "Likudnik. National. Liberal," journalist Eli Zipori, and blogger Ronit the Bibi-ist, as frequent instigators of these attacks.

Beyond online harassment, the study documented instances where attacks extended into the real world. This included false accusations against journalists' family members, the dissemination of personal information, and physical confrontations. In November 2025, activist Mordechai David confronted Guy Peleg, and in February 2026, David and Rami Ben-Yehuda approached Lucy Aharish's home, leading to their arrest. Vandalism and graffiti with threats were also reported at the offices of Channel 12, Channel 13, and Haaretz newspaper.

Fake Reporter warns that these escalating attacks, which blur the lines between online rhetoric and real-world actions, pose a threat to press freedom and the public's ability to receive accurate information, particularly as elections approach. The organization highlighted that while direct coordination is not proven, the consistent targeting and rapid escalation of rhetoric are deeply concerning.
