Jaffa Kindergarten Shut Down After Threats, Arson Incident

A private kindergarten in Jaffa, "Sulamot," which has operated for 16 years, was unexpectedly closed just 12 hours before the start of the academic year on Monday, August 31. Parents received a WhatsApp message around 8 PM stating that the building owner had decided to lock the premises and halt operations due to "threats and pressure from a neighbor." Kindergarten staff ceased responding to inquiries, leaving parents with their children at home without alternative arrangements.

The kindergarten's message to parents explained that the decision was "imposed" and unrelated to the garden's activities, adding, "In the current situation and in light of recent events, we cannot return children and staff to this place." They requested 48 hours to find a new location and were in contact with Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality officials.

Police confirmed that the closure stemmed from a conflict between the building owner and a local resident, with concerns that the situation could endanger children and staff. An investigation is underway following complaints, including one filed on Sunday, August 30.

Parents anonymously reported that tensions escalated after a family, allegedly linked to criminal elements, moved onto the street. A prior conflict between kindergarten parents and this family involved alleged smoke directed at the kindergarten while children were present. The situation reportedly worsened when the building owner received threats against himself and his family, demanding the kindergarten cease operations. His car was allegedly set on fire, and he was warned of harm if the kindergarten reopened, though police stated the circumstances of the arson and its connection to the conflict are unclear.

Parents expressed frustration, uncertainty, and fear, highlighting the disruption to their lives and the feeling of insecurity in Jaffa. They called for a serious investigation and protection for all involved. Both the police and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality deferred responsibility, with the police stating the closure decision was a municipal matter and the municipality referring to the police due to the criminal nature of the issue.
