Parents Halt Closure of Sole State Kindergarten in Mitzpe Ramon Amid Ongoing Staffing Dispute
In Mitzpe Ramon, a significant victory was achieved by secular parents who successfully prevented the closure of "Yaelim Kindergarten," the only state-run kindergarten in the town. The decision to keep the kindergarten open followed a parental campaign sparked by concerns over the lack of a designated replacement teacher after the previous educator, who served for seven years, announced her departure last year. The Ministry of Education had not appointed a successor, which led to low registration numbers and the threat of closure.
The parents' struggle is deeply influenced by a prior traumatic incident involving another local kindergarten, "Liel's Kindergarten," which was shut down in April last year amid allegations of child abuse. The indictment accused the director and two caregivers of at least 250 assault cases, including against the son of one of the leading parents, Yarden Nahon. This history has heightened parental sensitivity and demands for transparency and trust in the kindergarten staff.
Despite initial claims by the local council that insufficient enrollment (only five children registered versus the required twelve) justified closing the kindergarten, Nahon and other parents mobilized, contacting dozens of families and ultimately securing the necessary registrations. The local council head supported reopening the kindergarten, which was officially approved three days prior to the report.
However, the parents now face a new conflict over the identity of the kindergarten teacher. They insist on appointing a trusted, experienced educator familiar to the community, while the Ministry of Education's supervisor insists on assigning a different teacher who has not been active locally. Nahon accuses the supervisor of prioritizing bureaucratic staffing procedures over the community's needs, linking the insistence to the teacher's position on the staffing list and financial considerations.
The parents emphasize their demand is not against any religious group but for equal educational options reflecting their secular lifestyle. They warn that closing the state kindergarten could lead to the collapse of secular education in Mitzpe Ramon, where religious educational institutions are thriving. The Ministry of Education stated it is committed to providing quality education tailored to the community's diverse needs and plans to meet with parents and staff to ensure the kindergarten's smooth operation, while affirming that teacher assignments are made based on pedagogical and organizational considerations respecting teachers' rights.
