National Cyber Directorate Warns of Fake Ads Targeting Cellphone Access

Israel's National Cyber Directorate has issued a public warning regarding a sophisticated online scam utilizing fake advertisements on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These deceptive ads falsely offer free tickets or benefits for shows and events, impersonating well-known companies to lure unsuspecting users.

The scheme involves users providing their details through these fraudulent ads. Subsequently, the attackers contact the victims, requesting they share an "authentication code" sent via SMS. The Cyber Directorate emphasizes that this code, if provided, can enable attackers to gain control over the victim's cellular service.

To prevent falling victim, users are strongly advised against sharing any authentication codes with anyone, regardless of their claimed affiliation. It is crucial to carefully read SMS messages before taking any action and to verify promotions, benefits, and ticket offers exclusively through the official channels of the companies involved.

In cases where a user has already shared an authentication code and subsequently lost cellular reception, the National Cyber Directorate recommends immediately contacting their mobile carrier. This is to investigate potential SIM-swapping or unauthorized access to their phone line and to take immediate steps to block such activity.
