French Judoka Léa Fontaine to Sue Over Weight-Related Online Abuse

French judoka Léa Fontaine, a gold medalist at the Grand Slam in Lausanne this week, is considering legal action against social media users who posted insulting comments about her weight and appearance. Fontaine, who has won multiple international medals, including European and World Championship accolades, stated that while she respects constructive sports criticism, repeated mockery and personal attacks targeting her physical appearance cross the line of normal sports discourse.

Fontaine announced on Instagram that she would be taking appropriate measures with her legal counsel against statements that exceed the boundaries of sports criticism and basic human respect. She further clarified in an interview with L'Équipe newspaper that the abuse has begun to affect her loved ones, and she will not remain silent, having already filed a complaint.

Support for Fontaine has come from fellow athletes, including Olympic medalist Romane Dicko, who has also been a target of similar remarks. The French Judo Federation has publicly condemned all forms of discrimination and expressed solidarity with Fontaine. Fontaine has previously competed against Israeli judokas Raz Hershko and Yuli Fineish, and received supportive messages from other judo stars, such as Inbar Lanir.
