Ofer Winter Defends Joseph Haddad Against Religious Criticism
Ofer Winter, chairman of the "Am Yisrael" party, publicly defended Joseph Haddad on Wednesday, responding to Rabbi Shlomo Aviner's assertion that Haddad's inclusion on their party list, as a non-Jew, disqualifies the party. Winter, a former commander, drew parallels to his own military service, stating that he commanded and was commanded by Druze, Bedouin, and Christian leaders and soldiers, citing specific individuals like Imad Faris, Ahsan Deksa, Galaa Ibrahim, Alim Saad, and Salman Habaka. Winter emphasized that these individuals fought, led, and some even fell for Israel, proving their worthiness to lead.
Winter asserted that those who are worthy of being wounded or falling for the country are also worthy of leadership. He addressed Haddad directly, calling him "Am Yisrael" in full and expressing pride in Haddad's service as a commander in the Golani Brigade, his bravery in combat, and his continued dedication to protecting the Jewish people worldwide. Winter concluded by stating his belief in their eventual victory together.
In a separate statement, Winter rejected the idea of uniting with the Religious Zionism party, stating they would not serve as a shield for its leaders, Gafni and Goldknopf.
