Prison Guards Indicted for Negligent Homicide of Security Prisoner
The Southern District Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against 12 Israel Prison Service (IPS) officers in the Beersheba District Court. The charges include negligent homicide of security prisoner Tair Abu Asab at Ketziot Prison and the assault of eight other inmates. The incidents reportedly occurred on November 18, 2023, when a shift commander ordered guards into the cells. The guards then allegedly beat the prisoners with fists, kicks, and batons. Abu Asab lost consciousness following the assault and was later pronounced dead.
The commander and sergeant of the guards are also accused of obstruction of justice. They allegedly instructed other guards to lie to investigators or coordinate their testimonies. The indictment details how the guards entered the cells and proceeded to assault the prisoners.
