Unusual Flu Outbreak Hits Israeli Care Home, Three Deaths Reported

An unusual flu outbreak has occurred at the "Beit Balev" sheltered living facility in Kfar Saba, Israel, with 47 residents and staff infected in recent days. The infections are particularly notable as they occurred well before the peak of the flu season.

Three of the facility's patients have died. It remains unclear, however, if the flu was the primary cause of their deaths. The extent of the outbreak was revealed through proactive testing conducted at the facility following the fatalities.

According to the National Center for Disease Control, only ten new cases of Influenza A were diagnosed in general hospitals nationwide in the week ending August 22. Last year's flu season was unusually severe in Israel, with 189 deaths among hospitalized patients confirmed with influenza across 14 hospitals, representing about 60% of general hospital beds. In those cases, too, the flu's primary role in mortality was not always clear.

Last season, 4,526 individuals were hospitalized with confirmed influenza, including 2,930 adults, 1,460 children, and 136 pregnant women. Vaccination rates for the previous flu season were around 1.87 million individuals, or 19% of Israel's population. While 55% of those aged 65 and over were vaccinated, only 16% of infants and children aged 6 to 59 months received the vaccine.

Beit Balev stated that the flu cases were identified during comprehensive testing of elderly residents in a complex nursing ward. The facility noted that this year's illness began earlier than usual, preceding the vaccination season. A medical protocol was immediately implemented upon diagnosis, including treatment for patients and staff, and preventative measures for other residents to curb the virus's spread.
