U.S. Aircraft Removal at Ben Gurion Could Avert Mass Flight Cancellations
Israel Airports Authority has not sent the warning letter it had said was imminent, a letter that would have told airlines to prepare for a mass wave of cancellations because of parking shortages at Ben Gurion Airport. The decision not to issue it follows progress in moving some of the U.S. Navy refueling aircraft currently parked in Israel.
Airport officials still warned that the threat has not disappeared, and said hundreds of thousands of ticket cancellations could still occur as soon as July. Even so, the latest assessment is that some of the refueling and transport aircraft will be removed as early as this coming weekend.
About 75 American aircraft are currently parked at Ben Gurion, taking up a significant share of the airport's parking capacity. Their presence had raised concern that airline operations could be disrupted if space constraints worsened.
