Supermarket Price Comparison Reveals Significant Savings on School Lunch Items

As Israeli families prepare for the return to school, a price comparison of essential lunchbox ingredients has highlighted substantial differences in costs across major supermarket chains. The study, which analyzed a basket of goods including bread rolls, spreads, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables, found that choosing the cheapest retailer could save families tens of shekels.

The price comparison, conducted using the "Pricez" website, revealed that the least expensive basket of goods was found at Rami Levy, costing 409 shekels. In contrast, the most expensive basket was at Universe, totaling 463.65 shekels. This represents a difference of 54.65 shekels, or approximately 13.4% more for the identical set of products.

Notable price discrepancies were observed in several items. For instance, oranges were priced at 5.90 shekels at Rami Levy and Yohananof, compared to 7.90 shekels at other surveyed chains, a difference of 2 shekels. A 500-gram package of Elite chocolate powder drink mix showed a significant gap, costing 10.90 shekels at Rami Levy versus 15.90 shekels at Universe, a 46% increase. Grapes also exhibited a large price variation, with black or red grapes costing 14.90 shekels at Rami Levy and 24.90 shekels at Victory, a difference of 10 shekels or about 67% more at the pricier chain.

The findings underscore the impact of supermarket choice on household budgets, particularly during the back-to-school period when grocery expenses increase. Even seemingly inexpensive everyday items can add up to considerable savings when purchased from the most cost-effective retailers. The report advises consumers to compare prices before shopping, as the cheapest option may not always be at the same chain.
