Israel Basketball Team Admits Need for All Top Players After World Cup Qualifying Loss
The Israeli national basketball team concluded its August window for World Cup qualifiers with a 85-70 loss to Latvia, bringing their dismal record to 2-6. Hopes of qualifying for the World Cup had already dwindled after a previous loss to Poland, but the team had hoped for a better performance against Latvia.
Coach Ariel Beit-Halachmi's squad remained competitive until the end of the second quarter, even holding a lead at one point, but ultimately failed to keep pace with Latvia in the second half.
The overarching issue throughout the summer qualifying windows has been the absence of many key players, including Deni Avdija and Ben Shaff, who were not released by their NBA teams. This contrasts with other national teams whose players did participate in these windows.
Further complicating matters, Tamir Blatt and Adam Ariel were ruled out due to injury, and Rafi Menco departed early to be with his wife for the birth of their child. This situation has led to a perception that the national team is not a top priority for many players, unlike other European national teams.
This trend casts doubt on the team's prospects for the upcoming November and February windows, which are now seen as largely ceremonial. It is expected that players who receive limited minutes on their club teams will feature, as top players will be involved in EuroLeague competitions with both Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv.
If Kadin Carrington is not released by his new club, Hapoel Tel Aviv, this window may have been his last as a naturalized player for Israel. The aspiration for the 2029 EuroBasket campaign is to have Dani Wolf fill that roster spot.
Coach Beit-Halachmi's contract with the basketball association expires in February, and recent results are likely to influence the decision regarding his future. He was initially appointed largely due to his success with the youth national teams in 2018 and 2019 and his strong relationships with players who progressed to the senior team. However, the team's best achievement under his tenure, even with Avdija playing, was reaching the Round of 16 in EuroBasket, where they were eliminated by Greece.
"I don't think we have the privilege of appearing without our prominent players," Beit-Halachmi stated post-game. "We were missing quite a few players, and it has an impact. Different players appeared in each window, making it difficult to implement a playing style. Israeli basketball cannot afford to throw away games; we needed everyone with us. Other national teams maintain the same roster over time, but unfortunately, that's not the case for us."
Roman Sorkin added, "I can say that on the players' side, which I am a part of, we must perform better. We cannot look like this. We need to play better; I'm talking about myself right now and not criticizing anyone. I have no excuses, only the fact that we must play better and appear differently in games."
