Israel Basketball Coach Takes Blame After World Cup Qualifying Failure

Following the Israeli national basketball team's elimination from the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers after a loss to Latvia, head coach Ariel Beit-Halachmi has taken responsibility for the team's performance. "The team needed to look better, and I am taking responsibility for that," Beit-Halachmi stated in an interview with Sport 5. He acknowledged the significant disappointment felt by both the coaching staff and players, admitting the results were "not good" and that he is "not running away from it."

Beit-Halachmi cited a lack of continuity as the primary challenge throughout the campaign, pointing to fluctuating rosters, injuries, the absence of key players, and the inability to host home games. While emphasizing that the team should win with the players available, he noted that these significant absences made building a cohesive unit difficult. The coach also identified defensive instability as the main professional issue, highlighting a lack of aggression, poor team communication on defense, and struggles with one-on-one defense.

Despite the setbacks, Beit-Halachmi expressed belief in his ability to rebuild the team, but stressed that it requires a collective effort from the players and the entire system. He specifically called on Israeli players in the United States, including Deni Avdija, to commit to playing in the upcoming pre-Olympic tournament qualifiers this summer. "Basketball is not mine or my staff's, it belongs to everyone. The national team belongs to all of us, and everyone needs to do a little more," he said.

The Israel Basketball Association issued an unusual statement acknowledging the qualifying campaign's "professional failure" and results that did not meet expectations. The association announced that Beit-Halachmi will submit a summary report, after which a professional discussion will be held with the association's chairman and the professional committee chairman. They assured that a thorough professional review would be conducted regarding the team's conduct, staff, and preparations, with decisions about the future, including the coaching staff, to be made "objectively and not out of the heat of the moment."
