Israel Basketball Team Eliminated From World Cup Qualifiers After Loss to Latvia

The Israeli men's national basketball team has been eliminated from contention for the FIBA World Cup after suffering an 85-70 defeat to Latvia in Riga on Sunday. The loss, which followed a previous heavy defeat to Poland, means Israel can no longer qualify for the tournament.

The Israeli team played with a significantly depleted roster, featuring only ten players. Key players such as Deni Avdija, Ben Sheffer, Tamir Blatt, and Rafi Menco were absent due to various reasons.

The game was closely contested through the first half. Israel led by a narrow margin after the first quarter, 22-21, and even built a ten-point lead in the second quarter thanks to strong play from Roman Sorkin and Itay Segev. However, Latvia managed to tie the game at 41-41 by halftime.

Latvia took control in the third quarter, outscoring Israel and building a 67-58 lead heading into the final period. Latvian player Arturs Strautins was particularly effective from beyond the arc. In the fourth quarter, Latvia dominated the rebounds and extended their lead, ultimately securing the victory. Despite efforts from Yam Madar and Roman Sorkin, Israel struggled to score, and Latvia cruised to the win, ending Israel's World Cup hopes.
