Israel Basketball Team Falls to Germany, Jeopardizing World Cup Qualification

The Israeli national basketball team suffered a disappointing 92-86 loss to reigning world champions Germany in a World Cup qualifying match held in Riga. This defeat, part of the fifth round of Group E in the qualifiers, leaves Israel in third place with a 3-2 record, significantly diminishing their chances of advancing to the upcoming FIBA World Cup. The team, coached by Ariel Beit Halachmi, played without a full roster and struggled to overcome an early double-digit deficit.

Despite the setback, guard Yam Madar delivered a career-best performance, scoring 31 points and providing five assists, surpassing his previous national team high of 27 points. Naturalized player Kadeem Carrington also contributed strongly with a personal best of 21 points. However, their efforts were insufficient as the rest of the team failed to provide enough support to close the gap.

The game was largely decided in the opening minutes when Germany, led by Dennis Schröder and Kai Brünker, surged ahead with a 10-0 run. Israel trailed throughout the match, with Germany extending their lead to over 20 points in the second half. Although Israel mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter, reducing the deficit to single digits, Germany's superior experience and quality secured their victory.

With this loss, Israel faces a challenging path to qualify for the World Cup, as their next crucial game against Croatia will be decisive for their tournament hopes.
