Israeli Basketball Team Disappointed as Key Players Opt Out Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

The Israeli national basketball team returned home on Tuesday after disappointing performances against Germany and Croatia, which significantly reduced their chances of qualifying for the FIBA World Cup. The Israel Basketball Association acknowledged the setback and announced that a committee will convene on Thursday to review decisions made during the qualification window and draw conclusions.

In addition to the poor results, the team is concerned about injuries to players Eitan Borg and Ilai Dolinsky, who were not fully fit during the matches and will undergo further medical evaluations upon returning to Israel. There is also frustration within the association and team management over several players choosing not to join the national squad, which weakened the team's roster.

Team officials expressed regret that this qualification window, seen as a critical opportunity to secure a win, was not capitalized on. Team manager Moti Daniel emphasized the need for the basketball association to calmly analyze the situation, noting a pattern of individual decisions that have hurt the team. He criticized players who declined to participate, calling playing for the national team a privilege that should be embraced. Daniel praised player Tomer Ginat as a positive example of commitment during the recent games.

The association's review aims to address both the strategic and personnel challenges faced during this qualification phase, as the team grapples with diminished prospects for advancing to the World Cup.
