Tensions Flare at IDF Recruitment Center Over Haredi Draft

A tense situation unfolded at the IDF's recruitment center in Tel HaShomer on Sunday as dozens of young Haredi men reported for enlistment into combat roles, including the Hasmonean Brigade, Netzah Yehuda, and Negev Brigade. Outside the complex, a vocal confrontation erupted between extremist anti-draft protesters, chanting "We will die rather than enlist," and supporters of the draft, who responded with "Am Yisrael Chai" (The People of Israel Live).

Prior to the enlistment day, the "Badatz Tzedek" court of the Edah HaChareidis in Jerusalem issued a sharp letter urging the Haredi public to protest and persuade young men not to enlist. The letter, titled "Young Men Have Gone Captive," called on those able to attend to "act according to Torah law" and convince potential recruits to refrain from enlisting, stating, "Our strength is only in our mouths to cry out and warn." It urged them to "stand guard over the walls of Judaism."

The police deployed forces around the recruitment center in anticipation of disturbances and confrontations, aiming to ensure the enlistment day proceeded smoothly. The IDF is also preparing to receive the new recruits amidst the ongoing protest just outside the facility.

Alongside the recruits and protesters, politicians are expected at Tel HaShomer to express support for the Haredi draft. Among them are Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu; Yoaz Hendel, chairman of the National Union of Reservists; Moti Leitner; and the chairman of the Haredi Public Party, some of whom are scheduled to make statements. This enlistment day has become a focal point for one of Israel's central political and public disputes, especially during an election campaign where the Haredi draft issue remains a prominent topic.
