Israeli Engineering Soldiers Deny Fleeing Combat Zone, Cite Poor Conditions and Harassment

Thirteen engineering soldiers from Battalion 603 have publicly responded to reports that they fled the combat zone in Lebanon without authorization following disciplinary action. In a joint statement issued Saturday, the soldiers denied leaving the front lines, clarifying that they left their base but not the combat area. They explained that the disciplinary measures stemmed from a birthday celebration involving a humorous "human cake" prank, which they say was neither humiliating nor violent.

The soldiers acknowledged they left the base without permission but emphasized that their departure was also motivated by ongoing grievances about poor service conditions and mistreatment of the engineering company (CEMA). They described harsh punishments imposed on some members, including confinement, imprisonment, and dismissal from roles, all related to what was labeled "zuvor" (misconduct).

Further, the soldiers accused the battalion sergeant major of harassment and discriminatory treatment toward the engineering company. They highlighted overcrowded living conditions, with ten operators sharing rooms designed for eight beds, and recounted denied requests for basic improvements such as electricity connection for a container intended to alleviate housing shortages. They also complained about neglect in maintenance and lack of resources compared to other combat companies, despite their frontline role.

The soldiers concluded by firmly rejecting claims of fleeing the combat zone or any violent or humiliating behavior during the birthday event. They stressed their commitment to the country and called for recognition of their difficult service conditions and fair treatment moving forward.
