Financial Troubles at Ferencváros May Force Sale of Gabi Kanikovski to Maccabi Tel Aviv

Ferencváros, the Hungarian football club, is facing significant financial difficulties that could impact the upcoming season of the Israeli Premier League. The club is considering selling midfielder Gabi Kanikovski to Maccabi Tel Aviv after qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. Kanikovski himself is eager to return to Israel and has already agreed on personal terms with Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Hungarian club expects to receive a total of 9.95 million euros from transfers, including 4.14 million euros in an upfront payment, largely due to UEFA's Value Pillar system, which rewards clubs based on their European competition performance.

Ferencváros has generated substantial revenue from player sales during the transfer window, totaling 7.45 million euros, including Elton Acolatse's 2.5 million euro transfer to Saudi Arabia and Mohamed Abu Fani's 1.5 million euro move to Red Star Belgrade. Despite these sales, the club is under investigation for alleged misuse of approximately 68 million euros of public funds invested in building the "Ferencváros Stadium" during Viktor Orbán's government. The club's president, Gábor Kubatov, insists all funds were properly used and pledged full cooperation with authorities. The Hungarian Interior Ministry has filed a formal complaint, and the investigation threatens the club's future.

Political changes in Hungary and Kubatov's ties to the previous Orbán administration have led to uncertainty over the renewal of key sponsorship contracts with the state gambling company and energy group MVM, expiring in September and November respectively. This uncertainty has forced the club to cut its budget from 58 million to 41 million euros and consider selling players like Kanikovski, who earns about 550,000 euros per season and did not play in the Europa League playoff second leg. Kanikovski's registration deadline for European competitions is September 2, which may clarify his transfer status. The club aims to sell players for 10 million euros this window but has not yet reached that target. Kubatov remains calm, emphasizing preparations for worst-case scenarios and significant budget reductions across departments.
