IDF Chief Raises Alert Level in West Bank Ahead of Holidays Amid Budget Concerns

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir ordered an increase in military readiness in the West Bank ahead of the upcoming holiday period due to heightened security tensions and fears of simultaneous escalations across multiple fronts. During a multi-front situation assessment, Zamir stated that the IDF is advancing combat procedures across all arenas, from Iran and Lebanon to the Gaza Strip, with forces maintaining high alert amid what he described as "multi-front volatility." He directed the deployment of an additional regular brigade headquarters to strengthen forces in the area and said the army is prepared to immediately activate additional units and battalions if necessary.

Zamir emphasized that there will be no reduction in alert status during the holidays, affirming that the IDF will maintain full multi-front readiness with no operational downsizing. He also addressed the ongoing dispute over the defense budget, warning that an "empty treasury" harms the army's preparedness. Zamir noted that despite the budget challenges, the defense establishment will continue to focus solely on operational needs, stating, "We are engaged in defending the security of the State of Israel. This is the only consideration before us. We will not be distracted by issues that could divert our focus and readiness."
