Israeli Psychologists See Salary Boost After Decades-Long Struggle

Psychologists in Israel's public sector are now earning significantly more following a recent salary reform, the first in 46 years. As of April, an intern psychologist's base salary is NIS 11,250 per month, before seniority and additional benefits. This figure is set to increase by another NIS 250 next April. For comparison, the minimum wage is NIS 6,443.85 monthly.

A junior specialist psychologist starts with a base salary of NIS 13,250, with potential earnings reaching NIS 14,000 to NIS 20,000 gross for a full-time position, depending on various additions. These additions include seniority increments (1.5% per year up to 25 years, then 0.6% for years 26-30), military or national service (1% per year), management bonuses (5-25%), a 'readiness' bonus in healthcare (8%), and a master's degree (5%).

To incentivize experienced professionals to return to public service and reduce long waiting lists, specialists in healthcare, educational psychology, or hospitals can receive an annual bonus of NIS 20,000 for positions of 60% or more, along with a NIS 500-1,200 monthly professional responsibility bonus for those supervising interns. This comes as private clinics charge NIS 350-500 per session, with a full schedule potentially yielding NIS 16,000 to NIS 25,000 gross monthly before expenses.

The path to becoming a licensed psychologist is lengthy, requiring a bachelor's degree, a competitive master's program, and at least four years of supervised internship. Only after completing this rigorous process, including professional exams, can one be registered as a specialist, leading to a significant salary jump.

While Israeli public sector salaries now approach those in Western Europe, a gap remains with the United States, where psychologist salaries are considerably higher. However, the US requires a longer doctoral program and involves substantial living and healthcare costs. The profession's appeal lies in its growing demand, particularly post-war, and the ability to combine public and private income, despite the demanding training and emotional toll.
