The Knesset Finance Committee approved in first reading a bill that would continue daycare subsidies for ultra-Orthodox households based on the mother’s employment, even if the father evaded IDF enlistment. The Finance and Justice ministries strongly opposed the measure, warning it weakens incentives to enlist and work and could cost 300 million shekels a year. The bill is intended to bypass a Supreme Court ruling that ended subsidies for ultra-Orthodox men who did not regularize their military status.
