Palestinian Authority Builds Army-Like Forces, Raising Israeli Security Concerns

מאת Даниэль Микаэлов

The story · English

The Palestinian Authority (PA) is significantly expanding its security forces, which OSINT researchers estimate now number around 60,000, effectively forming a de facto army. Recent military parades in Jericho showcased advanced weaponry including RPG-7 grenade launchers, PKM machine guns, and modified M16, M4, and AK-47 rifles equipped with sniper scopes. The PA's security forces also possess armored vehicles and substantial explosives stockpiles. These developments are seen by some as a violation of the Oslo Accords, which prohibit the PA from producing or storing offensive weapons and explosives. Training programs have also intensified, with police academies and training centers in Jericho offering courses focused on urban warfare and engaging a potential enemy, including simulated attacks on Israeli settlements and military bases. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Hirsch of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Policy stated that the PA no longer conceals its transformation of security forces into an army, noting the regular use of the term "Palestinian army" on official television and the appearance of a "General Military Training Commission" banner. Concerns are amplified by reports of Palestinian officers receiving military training in countries like Pakistan and Russia. Hirsch also claims that between 2021 and 2024, approximately 78 PA police officers were linked to attacks against Israelis, with some foreign-trained graduates espousing jihadist rhetoric. In response, Jerusalem is reportedly concerned about the possibility of these forces turning against Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz recently requested an assessment of the Central Command's readiness for such a threat. Despite a reported decrease in attacks in Judea and Samaria in the first half of 2026 compared to previous periods, Israeli experts caution that this lull does not necessarily signify the end of the threat.
