Israeli Authorities Crack Down on Begging at Tzomet Tzofim Junction on Route 55

Nine Palestinians, including adults and minors, were arrested during an enforcement operation at Tzomet Tzofim junction on Route 55 near the Eliyahu crossing. The crackdown was prompted by a recent surge in begging activity where individuals approach vehicles stopped at traffic lights, causing safety and security concerns for drivers and local residents. The operation involved the participation of the Border Police and the Ephraim Regional Coordination and Liaison Headquarters.

Jonathan Kuznitz, head of the Karnei Shomron Regional Council, praised the enforcement action but emphasized it as only a first step. He has repeatedly urged security forces to maintain continuous enforcement to eradicate the dangerous practice. Kuznitz has communicated with key security officials, including Colonel Faiz Fares, commander of the Ephraim Brigade, and Superintendent Ital Almog, commander of the Ariel police station, demanding ongoing efforts.

Kuznitz stressed the importance of sustained action rather than one-time operations, stating his commitment to ensuring that residents can travel safely without harassment or fear. He affirmed his determination to continue coordinating with security agencies until the begging phenomenon is fully eliminated from the junction and surrounding areas.
