Israeli Border Police Officers Indicted for Smuggling Illegal Residents Through Checkpoint for Bribes

The Police Investigations Department (Mahash) has filed charges against two Israeli Border Police officers and a civilian for allegedly facilitating the illegal entry of unauthorized Palestinian residents through the Al-Jib checkpoint near Givat Zeev, from Area C into sovereign Israeli territory without security checks. According to the indictment submitted to the Jerusalem District Court, the officers developed personal ties with local Palestinians and allowed vehicles and passengers to pass without proper inspection. They also reportedly shared operational and intelligence information about the checkpoint and its work arrangements.

The illegal crossings were allegedly conducted in exchange for cash payments, meals, and drinks. One officer is accused of deleting messages from his mobile phone to obstruct the judicial process and attempting to persuade other officers to assist in smuggling unauthorized individuals into Israel. The officers face charges including bribery, fraud, breach of trust, obstruction of justice, and failure to perform official duties. The civilian is charged with multiple counts of bribery, illegal transportation, driving without a license, and operating an unlicensed vehicle.

The investigation was led by Mahash's exposure team, highlighting serious breaches of duty and corruption within the Border Police ranks. The case underscores ongoing security concerns at checkpoints and the challenges in preventing illegal crossings into Israel.
