Turkey Accelerates Naval Expansion Under Erdogan's 'Blue Homeland' Doctrine

Turkey is currently constructing 47 warships simultaneously as part of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ambitious plan to transform the country into a regional naval power. This naval buildup is central to Ankara's 'Blue Homeland' doctrine, which asserts extensive maritime claims in the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. The doctrine aims to expand Turkey's influence and secure its maritime rights, reflecting a strategic shift toward naval strength amid regional tensions.

The Turkish Navy, already the largest in the Mediterranean and ranked tenth worldwide, is rapidly growing while reducing reliance on foreign military suppliers by developing a domestic naval defense industry. Turkey is also exporting naval platforms to other countries, with 24 maritime platforms currently under construction for foreign clients. Erdogan invoked the legacy of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha, an Ottoman naval commander, to emphasize the historical and strategic importance of maritime dominance.

This naval expansion has heightened tensions with Greece, particularly over maritime boundaries and potential gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis warned that Athens is prepared to respond to any Turkish moves that threaten its rights. The overlapping maritime claims between Turkey and Libya further complicate the regional dynamics.

Israel is closely monitoring Turkey's naval growth, with former Israeli Navy Commander Eliezer (Cheini) Marom warning of direct implications for Israel. He highlighted potential challenges to Israeli energy projects, such as subsea gas pipelines and fiber optic cables, which may require Turkish approval. Marom stressed the need for Israel to adopt a comprehensive strategic approach and strengthen its navy to counter emerging threats.

Erdogan framed the naval buildup as part of a broader vision for Turkey's future, declaring that the era of a "great and powerful Turkey" has begun. His son-in-law, a prominent proponent of the 'Blue Homeland' doctrine, emphasized that Turkey will never relinquish any part of its maritime domain, likening it to a cherished garden that provides solace and security.
